Absence Into Night

The absence of wheat in a young maiden's wooden bucket
It trailed her through fields and creek
stops at the brick steps
at the back of the house.

She dropped it
and tumbled
down
into the night.

She's on the walk,
braids untangled
jaw down on the chest
she shared with too many men.

Eyelid froze
lung seizing.

  1. This feels cryptic and accessible at the same time.
    It's sad, but powerful.
